EE Times Virtual SOC Conference November 18th 2010

OTTAWA, Canada, 17th November 2010

XtremeEDA is proud to be participation in the EETimes Virtual SOC Conference to be held Thursday November 18 2010. David Black, XtremeEDA Practice Leader for SystemC/ESL (and NASCUG Chairman) will be a panelist of the System Level Design panel, scheduled for 12:30 - 1:30 EST.

There is growing agreement on the value of using system-level descriptions of SoC designs. Today, such descriptions allow algorithm exploration, functional partitioning, and some rough estimates as to system, cost, size, power, and performance. However, only a few vendors support the ability for system-level descriptions to be synthesized into RTL, and these solutions often support only limited types of structures. Have we already seen the future of system-level design, or is there a real path to directly synthesizable system-level descriptions, reusable test benches, and accurate estimates of design characteristics from system-level code?

Moderator: Clive (Max) Maxfield, Vice President, TechBites Interactive

Panelists:

  • Tom Feist, Sr. Director of Marketing, Xilinx, Inc.
  • David C Black, ESL Practice Leader, XtremeEDA
  • Harry Gries, ASIC and SoC Design Consultant
  • George Harper, Vice President of Marketing, Bluespec, Inc.
XtremeEDA Announces the Launch of The XtremeEDA Professional Development Series

OTTAWA, Canada, 4th November 2010

XtremeEDA releases a new education series of articles to promote creativity and innovation in verification leadership

XtremeEDA Corporation, a professional services company, specializes in Design Assurance (DA) by offering Electronic System Level (ESL) modeling and Design Verification (DV) of ASICs and FPGAs. Today, the company announced the launch of The XtremeEDA Professional Development Series. The Series is designed to provide professionals in all disciplines of hardware development - from concept through to silicon - with the leadership and management experience and perspective to successfully deliver the complex products that have become the norm in the industry.

"Solid leadership and management is a fundamental pre-requisite to successful adoption of new technology and delivery of increasingly complex products", said Claude Cloutier, president of XtremeEDA. "At a time when we're seeing a great deal of technical innovation dedicated to causes like closing the functional verification gap and enabling hardware/software co-development, we see corresponding innovation in leadership and management of these complex processes as being absolutely critical to achieving success. As a services company with a wide range of capabilities, and through numerous client engagements over the life of the company, we've seen a lot of different and successful practices in many companies. We firmly believe that sharing our perspectives and experiences is an obligation of leadership and we invite everyone to participate for the benefit of all. The XtremeEDA Professional Development Series is a way for us to fulfill that obligation, not only to our clients but to the industry as a whole. We hope that the series will be most beneficial to those who are currently in leadership roles and looking to do things better but most importantly, for those who aspire to the role."

The XtremeEDA Professional Development Series is a running set of articles that discuss various aspects of hardware development from a leadership perspective and a platform for the community to participate and share experience. It is moderated by Neil Johnson and Aimee Sutton, both Principal Consultants at XtremeEDA.

"For me, the XtremeEDA Professional Development Series is a way for me to reach out to a younger, less experienced version of myself", said Neil Johnson "I think all of us at XtremeEDA feel there is value in sharing a view of our professional development - the highs and lows. In a way, this is our version of 20/20 hindsight for our clients and followers to use as they see fit. We have top-notch consultants on staff with exceptionally diverse experience and we see The XtremeEDA Professional Development Series as a great way to share it. We hope people like it."

The series will have a new entry every 2-3 weeks and will evolve depending on the interests of the readership. Its main focus at the outset is on topics related to the challenges and rewards of leading and managing verification efforts. "The Verification Lead" series is the first running set of articles by Neil Johnson and Aimee Sutton. While articles will touch on some technical aspects of verification, the goal is to encourage creativity and innovation in leadership and management.

The XtremeEDA Professional Development Series also includes opinions and perspectives from experts in the field. People wishing to participate are welcome to contact us at pds@xtreme-eda.com

XtremeEDA Engineers Presenting at SNUG San Jose 2010

OTTAWA, Canada, 24 March 2010

XtremeEDA announced today one of its most experienced engineers is presenting at this year's Synopsys User's Group (SNUG) meeting in San Jose, California, Massachusetts, held March 29th through 31st.

Neil Johnson, Principal Consulting Engineer, will present in the TC2 session his paper entitled "Agile IC Development with Scrum".

The paper gives an introduction to Scrum and discusses how it may reasonably be adopted in IC development. Scrum is a process for developing software based on industrial process control theory used heavily in agile software development. It employs mechanisms such as self-organization and emergence where a self-managed team incrementally develops software through a series of 30-day sprints. Scrum relies on the assumption that in committing to a set of regularly scheduled deliveries, the most effective processes will emerge from the team itself. Process imposed by the team, Scrum asserts, is more effective than defined or externally imposed process.

Agile-related discussions can be found at AgileSOC as well as a LinkedIn discussion group that's free to join.

This talk will look at how some current technologies are addressing this issue and suggest some possible directions."

Adaptability Breeds Success in IP Development - latest posting on agilesoc.com

OTTAWA, Canada, 15 February 2010

Neil Johnson has just posted another paper in a continuing series on Agile development at www.agilesoc.com entitled "Adaptability Breeds Success in IP Development"

This article proposes techniques used in agile software development and lean product development as a means of creating a responsive, highly adaptive IP development team that is driven by the needs of its customers. The article identifies an adaptive and successful IP development team as one that:

  • engages with customers early and often;
  • establishes a cycle for feedback; and
  • establishes a cycle for improvement.
